Mekong Madness

Moving from one country to another can be quite a hassle.
We always pictured crossing the border to have high security, uniformed officials and sniffer dogs at the ready to give us foreigners the once over before entering the country.
The ‘ordeal’ from leaving Thailand and getting to our first stop in Laos, (Luang Prabang) was one that will never be forgotten!
Best way to explain it is to tell you first what was supposed to happen. We would get the bus to Chiang Khong in Thailand, cross a small river and go …

Lopburi and the renegade monkeys

After the interesting couple of days in Ayutthya (see here) we decided it was time to start making tracks North towards Chiang Mai.  Before that we wanted to make one more stop on the way before getting the sleeper train.
Upon consulting the Lonely Planet guide we decided that the next destination should either be Sukhothai or Lopburi.  Our mind was soon made up when we discovered that Sukhothai’s primary attractions were more temples (something we had already seen plenty of).  Lopburi, on the other hand, had been described in the …

Kanchanaburi

After a return to Bangkok for a second time in under a week we were both looking forward to a break from the smog and heat of Bangkok.  Kanchanaburi was just the ticket.  It’s a small town with a rich history located about 4 hours west of Bangkok.
Neither of us knew why it was a popular tourist destination until we looked it up in the guidebook.  The only reason we had thought about going there was because a couple of Ozzy guys (Ben 1 and Ben 2) had mentioned that …

Koh Chang

After the madness of Bangkok and Hong Kong a beech break was much needed. Before I left for Thailand I found out that a friend of mine, Gemma, was going out to Koh Chang on holiday. This was was the perfect excuse to hit the beech. After 5 days in Bangkok we hopped on a bus for the Island. 5 1/2 hours later we had arrived.
There was an initial confusion with the taxi service as there only seems to be one road on the Island and taxi drivers seemed to …

Hong Kong – Part 2

2nd Full Day in Hong Kong
After going a little too hard on the drink we woke up at around midday feeling slightly hazy on it and tried to figure out from the last pictures on the camera what time we got home.  We still aren’t entirely sure but today was a new day in Hong Kong (even though we’d slept to through most of it).  We decided to take a break from the Skyscrapers and fast pace of the city, Repulse Bay was just the ticket.  We caught the bus …

Hong Kong – Part 1

Round the World – Official Start
After a 12 hour flight and some slightly cramped British airways plane seats we arrived in Hong Kong feeling less that fresh but ready to jump into the Hong Kong life.  This was the official start to our round the world adventure.  To ease ourselves in to the trip we opted for some hotel accommodation on Kowloon Island.  The only problem was that we had to find it.  We knew the address was  Nathan Road and accessed the tourist information desk how to get there.  …

Packing fun

Here I am sitting in Suk 11 Hostel in the middle of Bangkok’s Sukhumvit disctrict.  I have plenty of stories to tell and I’m only a week into the adventure but I thought I would bring the blog up to date first.
The weeks and days flew by in the run up to the start of the trip and there was one thing that I was not looking forward to at all.  That was the packing.  How do you pack for a round the world trip?  Well…it wasnt easy.
To begin with …

Nerves, nerves, nerves

4 weeks today and we’ll be setting off on our trip.  The last time I posted here it was 11 weeks to go.  I’m at a loss to know what the hell I’ve been doing over the past 7 weeks.  Time has seriously flown in.
The excitement about the trip has now turned into nerves (hopefully short-lived).  Its really started to hit home now that I in a few weeks time I’ll be leaving my job and jetting off around the world.  They really started to kick in when my job …

Time’s flying. 11 weeks tomorrow.

Time is flying by at the minute.  I think it must be down to being so busy in work with conferences (8 in 8 weeks and counting), countless brochures, Northern Ireland Yearbook, re-branding, white van man and general technical ‘go to’ guy.  Never a dull moment.  I don’t mind so much because I know that come the 16th January I will be starting the RTW adventure.
The planning and preparation has taken a bit of a lull lately as I’ve been struggling on with the TEFL course.  I’ve finally got  through …
