TEFL – Not proving a walk in the park

If you’ve been reading through blog you’ll have notice that we were considering doing a TEFL course and teaching English in South-East Asia to bring in some extra cash during the RTW.  After some intense debate in Starbucks we have decided to plow on with this idea and, as a result, we have now embarked on a 120 hour online TEFL course by i-to-i.  It’s not proving to be a walk in the park though, as I’ll now explain.
As you may already know, its been quite a few years since …

I tefl-ly need to blog more

My absence from the blogging world has been way too long.
Lots of updates since I last graced the site with my words of wisdom. Just a little update in terms of timescale to highlight how long since I blogged…
The X Factor has actually surpassed the auditions, boot camp and first live final 12 show, Claire Hudson has been in Liverpool for nearly 2 months and we’re into double figures on the aul countdown til Jan 16th.
All in all it’s been a busy few weeks with the preparation for going away. As …

Working during the trip

During out initial planning stages for the trip we always had in mind that we would either work in Australia or New Zealand, with New Zealand being first preference for both Donna and myself.
As you are probably all probably more than aware of, the global economy is in a bit of a poor state.  We’ve been hearing reports left, right and centre that backpackers in Australia and New Zealand are finding it difficult to find work at the minute.  The main reason for this being that jobs which were usually …

Sitting in. No fun.

Its been a tough month since Donna and I are taking part in the so-called “Shoestring September” we are only allowed to get by on £10 per week (excluding Diesel money) .  Getting by on a budget like this during the week is fine but when it comes to the weekend, its no fun at all.  This is especially true when you know all you mates are going out and you’ve opted to sit in.
I keep trying to tell myself that it’ll be worth it when I’m off round the …

4 months and counting.

Today is the 16th September which means its 4 months until we depart (16th January 2010).  Time is going by quickly but 4 months seems like an age away.
We’re back into conference season in work and the days are flying by because we are so busy between preparing for the conferences, working on the magazine, designing conference brochures and every other random IT task in between.  Its been an intense and stressful few months and is looking like the next few months is going to be just as hectic (but …

Shoestring September – Day 13

Temptation has struck.
In an extremely odd sunny day (for Belfast) I took to the seaside with Lisa and Caoimhe. Bending budget was at the back of my mind but I started as I meant to go on. I stole 3 magnums outta the freezer for us.
Note to anyone reading this- magnums make ya thirsty so do bring accompanying water with you. I did not do such things and ended up buying a drink and giving into a magners! I’m starting the week in minus figures now cuz im going to the …

Getting things done

The preparation continues.  In the past week or so I’ve managed to sort out another couple of important items.
The first of these being my Driving License renewal.  Although my driving license is not due to expire until June 2010 I’ll be needing it for the trip so thought it was best to get it sorted now before I leave.  Its currently with the DVA so hopefully I’ll have it back soon so I can get an international driving license to accompany it.
The second item that I sorted out was the …

Shoestring September – Day 5

This non spending malarky seems alright. Saying that, I’ve not had any temptation as it’s been a pretty bog standard work week since I began my journey into the financial desert.
As I spoke of ‘breaking point’ in my last blog….I am 24 hours into being semi-rich dons again after getting paid yesterday.
When i say ‘semi-rich’ I actually mean ‘skint as ever’. This pay packet has been spent before it even hit my bank account with the amount of little medeelies waiting to be paid for.
I know I’m gonna be majorly hit up for …
