Taking the road well travelled

Travelling gives you the luxury of meeting new people.
Before embarking on a trip, hope and pray you like the people you do meet because it’s not going to be the last you see of them. I don’t know if it is because we cling to our photocopied or otherwise ligit copies of Lonely Planet but these days most of us are heading in the same direction.
It might just be a faded concept that the travelling folk are all hippies with backpacks that whip out a compass and let the wind …

Best bits in pics – Part 2

This is wee Buddha bum. All the kids in Vietnam were cute (although after teaching them for four months I can also say slightly annoying at times too) but Buddha is one of my favourites. Everytime he ran into the water his shorts would fall down round his ankles… giving us a different type of full moon…something I giggled at the whole day.
The joys of the sleeper bus. This picture was taken while I was conked out on our journey to Mui Ne. A rare occasion that we got a …

Best bits in pics – Part 1

Here are a few of the best bits of 2010 in photographs. Behind every picture there’s a witty story usually so do read on through them and enjoy!

Hong Kong. The beginning of the trip and the beginning of my stardom among the Asian population. This woman purposely made her way over to me to ask could she get a photograph with me. So started a wave of Asian men and women asking me for a pic with them…or just randomly taking photos of me in the street. Oh to be …

One year of travels

The day has finally arrived.
We’ve been on the road for one full year today. Both of us want to reflect on some of our favourite bits we might have missed out on during our travels and our hopes for what’s to come in 2011.
Donna…
From the first sip of Magners at Belfast City Airport waiting to board the first plane of our big adventure to the 1.5 ltr of water I’m drinking typing this on New Zealand’s Interisland ferry, a lot has happened in the past year!
Sitting in the bar excited …

The Secret Diary of a Call (Centre) Girl

Ok so my job might not be as exciting as the TV show title it rips off but it’s worth a mention on this blog.
Yes it’s a secret that I’m blogging while I’m in work…but to be honest I don’t think it’s that big of a deal really. That’s where working attitudes differ between Australia and the UK.
I’m no Belle deJour but I have been working in a call centre for a financial company for 6 weeks now. It was tough getting back into the routine of working life…especially after a month of thai partying …

Working in Saigon – A day in the life

Saigon (officially known as Ho Chi Minh City) is Vietnam largest city with a population of around 8 million people and over 5 million motorbikes. Anyone that has visited this city will agree that it is crazy busy, making crossing the road a bit of a gauntlet and finding a quiet area even more difficult.
Strange as it might seem but Donna and I decided to settle amongst the madness for 4 months and teach English in Saigon. The original plan was to teach in Cambodia, but having enjoyed travelling down …

Best toilet in the world

I’ve seen my fair share of horrific toilets during my travels around Southeast Asia but was pleasantly surprised when I had to answer the call of nature on the Slow Boat from Vietnam into Cambodia. As I stepped into the toilet I soon realised that this could quite possibly be the best toilet in the world. Its certainly a toilet with the best views I’ve ever seen before. The experience was too good not to share so I grabbed my camera and recorded the toilets-eye-view so you can judge for …

Bus Travel in Asia – Top Tips

South East Asia is a big place but it’s incredibly easy to get from A to B using any number of ways – Flying, Buses, Jeeps, Taxi-shares, organised tours…the list goes on.  Anyone who has travelled in the region before will know that taking a bus is usually one of the most cost-effective options.  However the quality of the bus service varies vastly from country to country, this is something we have learned with each bus we stepped on.  With this in minds I thought I would write a few …

Photo of the Week- Mekong Delta

This little boy showed the adults how to do it on the Mekong Delta tour. When presented with a Burmese Python, this groovy dude jumped at the chance to have a go holding it.
As you can see from everyone’s reaction in the background, everyone was delighted to see him having so much fun with the snake.
He also deserves his prime place as Photo of the Week on Borebags purely for wearing those trousers. He is a real dude!

Cruising through Halong Bay

Halong Bay was high on the list of priorities on my “must see” list of things to see in Vietnam. Believe it or not, the main reason for this was down to the Top Gear Vietnam special. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really should look it up. It shows the beauty of Vietnam perfectly, alongside the usual larking about from Clarkson, Hammond and Captain Slow.
Halong Bay is one of the most iconic places to visit in Northern Vietnam. You can’t visit Hanoi (or northern Vietnam) and not do …
