Shoestring September

Day 1
After trawling sites to find inspiration on how to save money i came across this little medeely.
Mail Online – How a cash-strapped teacher beat credit crunch by living on £1 a day for a YEAR after drunken bet
It may not come from the best sourced newspaper in the world but i was intrigued by the story. A drunken bet usually never lasts any longer than a few days at most but this wee doll managed to live on just  a quid a day for a whole year.
When i read on …

Scuba dooby do

As soon as we had booked the trip my thoughts had turned to things we could be doing when we get out to more tropical climates.  Scuba diving was something that I had always wanted to do and was keen to learn more about.
I visited Hawaii in 2007 for a friends wedding and spent most of my time in the water checking out the sea life.  I’ve never been in such a tropical climate before and was amazed by the amount of sea life all around me.  There was multi-coloured …

(Not so) hidden expenses

When we were originally planning on the round the world trip we knew it wasn’t going to be the cheapest of adventures but we assumed that the biggest expense would be purchasing the tickets.
We soon realised that there were lots of other expenses that we hadn’t given much thought to.  One of these expenses was travel insurance.  I suspected that travel insurance wasn’t going to be as cheap as the £15 single trip insurance that you got down the Post Office.  Because we are planning on being away for a …

Sometimes I wonder…

…what it’ll be like when I read back on this in years to come. You think i’ll look back fondly on the memories and say “Wow I’m so glad I worked so hard and shed blood, sweat and tears to have such a fantastic time!”
Rewinding back to the present, I  haven’t exactly shed blood….or broke out into a sweat from working so hard. But I am gonna start!!
X Factor began tonight – and I’m working tomorrow 10-7. For all you that know me… you know I like my lie-ins. Especially on Sundays …

Choosing a camera for the trip.

We will be visiting some of the most stunning places in the world and I want to ensure that I have a camera to capture as much as possible.  Currently I don’t have a camera and have never been particularly snap happy with one.  I need to work on changing that if I’m to capture some of the memories from the trip.  To remedy the lack of a camera I decided to do some research into decent compact cameras.
The original plan was to invest in a Digital SLR camera, separate …

Lots of Tall Ships…and one not so Tall Ship

We went up to see the Tall Ships on 14th August to see what all the fuss was about.  Belfast City Council had pulled out all the stops when advertising the event.  It seemed that wherever you went there was a huge poster advertising “Belfasts biggest ever event”.
They had done such a good job that I felt that I would be missing out on something if I didn’t go see the even. So on the Friday evening after work I went up and met Donna and we ventured down to …

The countdown is on

I get the feeling that the countdown is really on now and things are coming together nicely.  We booked our hotel for the 1st stop in the trip (Hong Kong) last week.   We will be staying in a fairly standard 3* hotel in central Hong Kong.  Apparently it is fairly close to all the main attractions.
Since Donna will be celebrating her birthday there and its the first leg of our trip we decided to go  for the Hotel option in stead of a Hostel.  After that though it will …

Some technical updates

I’ve been working away behind the scenes trying to get the website in good shape for when we hit the road.  Some things have been proving more difficult that others.  I’ve finally managed to get the gallery feature up and running (although it still needs more tweaking to get it looking right).
It proved a bit of a nightmare. Something to do with php memory limit being reached or something was causing all sort of problems with installing it.  All of which was way beyond me.  I finally got it …
